New Zealand fly fishing calendar

Planning a fly fishing trip in New Zealand means juggling overlapping seasons. The general licence area opens 1 October, backcountry and designated waters don’t open until 1 November, Taupō District rivers run their own schedule, and a handful of waters fish year-round. Getting dates wrong wastes a trip.

Fish & Game New Zealand publishes the regulations, but there’s no calendar to subscribe to. I wanted the season windows to show up in my regular calendar (the same place I plan everything else) so the dates are visible at a glance when I’m scheduling time off. So I made one, using the same approach as my seasons calendar.

The ICS file covers the main season types as recurring all-day events: general sports fish, backcountry and designated waters, Taupō District rivers, and North Island winter fisheries (May–June), which stay open after the main season closes and are easy to forget about.¹
